Unshuffled. Intentional listening. Band by band. Album by album. Song by song.
Remember how it used to be?
Buying an album used to be an act of commitment. Your budget was limited. Albums were costly. You had to DECIDE which album you wanted to listen to for the next few weeks or months. So you bought that sucker and listened the hell out of it. Every riff. Every chorus. Every key change, every lyric, to the final coda. The cover art was a work of intricate beauty. You knew which brand of cymbals the drummer used. The keyboard player thanked his cat in the liner notes.
The third song on Side B that you hated when you first bought the album? That grew on you. It ended up becoming your favourite.
These days? Nup. Fuhgeddaboutit. iTunes shuffle killed the album, and Spotify cremated the corpse and snorted the ashes. Nobody listens to albums any more. Nobody follows bands any more. That band you loved in the late 90s? They're still out there slaving away producing great music, but you're not listening.
Every modern music lover knows that nagging feeling - there are a bunch of bands you KNOW you should have listened to by now to but you never got around to. And if you keep opening an app and pressing shuffle every time you want to hear some music, that's the way it's gonna stay.
It's time to change. It's time to focus your ears and your mind. To DECIDE what you want to listen to again. And to listen to it intently, over and over, until you can anticipate every note.
